Beneath banners reading “4 better years than these,” with the symbol of the PD victory, with the slogan “The next 4 years, the best of our lives” and “With us, true ideas win and not illusions,” with meaningful photographs of Berisha, in a grand rally attended by hundreds and thousands of citizens and democratic supporters of Fier, President Berisha officially announced the start of the May 26 election campaign. Sali Berisha made known to the people of Fier the program of the PDSH, presenting in the distinctive Berishian style, full of humor, mastery and passion, the achievements so far and the near prospect of victory on May 26 and in the 4 years to come. “Yesterday we made their choice. Today it is Albania’s turn; it is up to Albanians to vote and deliver the strongest blow in the history of their country for the establishment in Albania of the most advanced democracy in Europe. The freest press, the most independent unions, the strongest opposition, the most powerful parliament, the most developed civil society! All this, not to close in on ourselves but to move forward on the surest path of integration into Europe,” said President Berisha. Referring today to Republican Bob Dole’s election campaign in New York as “an event of extraordinary importance,” Berisha said that “it would be an honor for this country, an honor for the PD, to also have the Republican Bob Dole.” “But is there,” Berisha asked, “today a candidate like Bob Dole? There is not! The only such candidate is Sali Berisha!” “We all know that today in the world more than 500 million web pages are written in one year, but there is no city in the world that is fully included on the internet. And in this respect Albania comes first in Europe with the order ‘Internet in every home.’” “It will take on May 26, its history. Fier must show all Albanians today that there is no force in Europe that can stop the momentum and free spirit of this nation toward victory on May 26,” President Berisha stressed. Referring to the PDSH list in Fier, President Berisha described its parliamentary candidates as “a very strong team, each more valuable than the other, with a special dedication to the interests of the citizens.” In his view, “Those gentlemen are regarded throughout Albania as a group with clear democratic profiles. Citizens of Fier, Democracy did not come as an act, or as a miracle. Democracy came as a powerful peaceful movement of the free men and women of this country, who rose up to deliver a deadly blow in the history of this country to the most communist dictatorship humankind has ever known. You came here today, filled this square, and proved that as free people, you remain noble citizens and true patriots; you remain citizens determined to advance, wisely, bravely, but determinedly, on the path of your freedoms and rights. Today you have before you the greatest battle, the battle with which you vote not only for the governance of the next four years, but also for the future of your children. You vote for Albania’s European perspective. You vote against the socialist masquerade, their hypocrisy and deceit. Dear friends, Last Saturday, the European Youth Forum, after analyzing the situation of young people in Albania and the region, concluded that the young people of Albania today enjoy the greatest freedoms and the greatest opportunities for education and employment in their own country compared with all the young people of the countries in the region. This is a great victory for free people. Today we are heading toward an epic battle. We are undertaking this battle to win. Victory in the May 26 elections is of decisive importance not only for the governance of the next four years, but for Albania’s future. Those forces that on May 26 will receive the votes of Albanians will govern this country until the year 2000; and therefore these elections are extremely important for every Albanian. We must take upon ourselves the solemn obligation to tell every man, woman and child at least once that on May 26 every Albanian must vote. Without their vote we cannot build freedom. Nor citizenship, nor democracy. I say this because the fate of the country and the nation depends on the presence of every Albanian at the ballot box on May 26. We must persuade them with arguments, invite them kindly, but we must tell them the truth. The Socialist Party and its allies are the ones who want to take Albania backward. They are the deniers of your freedoms. They do not believe in freedom and cannot defend the freedom of the Albanian citizen. America and the world base the great and wise future of children on the internet. We have given and will continue to give “internet in every home,” and in this respect we are among the first countries in the world. Albanians and Albanians of Fier, For us, Albania must move toward Europe, in a permanent alliance with our greatest friends, the United States of America. Our relations with the USA are vital relations. The freedom of Albanians and of Albania is inseparably linked to them. Albania is moving forward. Albania is moving quickly. It is moving and moving with new momentum. Fier, this wonderful district, with hardworking people, with inexhaustible energy, with wisdom, with great traditions, will be one of the locomotives of the country's development in the years to come.
